Gender equality across Vietnam industries

Gender equality across industries project (GEAI) is funded by the U.S. Consulate General, with the vision to raise public awareness in the "gender equality" issues, which have been existing across many fields and sectors in Vietnam. The project for 2021-2022 has been approved to focus on 4 industries: Press & Media, Non-profits, Retails & Beauty & Education.

Non-profits has been selected to be our next industry. Gender equality is the 5th goal among UN's 17 sustainable development goals by 2030, and this matter has been long discussed as a “subtle and entrenched” issue within the Non-profit sector across the globe. Statistics pointed out that 70-75% of employees in this sector are women, with 60% female leaders in the small organisations, and this number drops down to only 20-25% in the larger groups (Rendon, 2021). Furthermore, according to Forbes US in 2019, salary increases for men almost double women’s, at 8.4% and 4.9% respectively. A recent study from Drexel University in 2021 further elaborated that executive female leaders earn 8.9% less than their male colleagues “when there is room for salary negotiations”.

Some root-caused problems being identified are: income inequality, salary compression, corporate sector spillover - when many nonprofit leaders are sourced from the private sector, and bias and lack of decision maker diversity - especially from the board members. What about gender roles? Is it a root problem in the Vietnam non-profit sector? Joining the panel discussion, the audience can hear the diverse voices from the stakeholders, as well as to see a broader picture to the gender equality matter in the Vietnam market for Non-profits. For the relevance of Vietnam's non-profit landscape, this sector will include social enterprises too.

At GEAI, we do not stop only at women empowerment, but rather focus on gender equality and diversity. It covers any gender minority presenting in a certain industry, regardless if they are men, women, or LGBTQ+.
